PRODUCT INFORMATION

The DSRC Communications Router is an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) vehicle communications and computing platform being used in the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) initiative of the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) aimed at improving highway safety and automotive congestion relief.

 

Based on the Parvus DuraCOR 1100 computer and Wind River Linux, the router hosts automotive applications for collision avoidance, guidance, and infotainment. Installed onboard road vehicles involved in proof-of-concept activities in the VII program, the unit securely communicates vehicle positioning, diagnostics, and information-level data to roadside access points via the 5.9 GHz DSRC radio protocol.

 

Using this device, major automotive manufacturers are currently determining feasibility of a nationwide VII rollout, which would involve the build-out of networks, digital radios, pods and communications systems on major US roadways. Data transmitted from the roadside to the vehicle could warn a driver that it is not safe to enter an intersection. Vehicles could serve as data collectors and anonymously transmit traffic and road condition information from every major road within the transportation network. Such information would provide transportation agencies with the information needed to implement active strategies to relieve traffic congestion.
